The C2-C5 motion segment, which includes the C4-C5 disc, is prone to damage which can cause degeneration, disc herniation, trauma, or neurological impairment. Herniated discs cause symptoms in less than 2% of the population each year, with most cases occurring in young adults and middle-aged people. Herniated discs are common, and they become more commonplace as people get older.
